SECESTA enables the monitoring of the atmospheric dispersion of ash produced by Etna’s explosive activity in an area covering the towns between the volcano’s mouth and Catania airport.
To do this, sensors have been installed at strategic points in the territory, which can be viewed on an interactive map within the web app. The system provides an ‘early warning’ of the phenomena in the event of anomalous measurements and above the threshold, in order also to guarantee the safety of air traffic.
